This Self OFFENSIVE seminar will teach women how to effectively fight back against a physically superior opponent. Learn to change your mindset from defensive to offensive and take control of a less than ideal situation.

The class will cover basic mental and physical techniques that each participant can easily recreate if she has to. Nothing will be taught that is deemed complicated nor ultra advanced. Everything will be simple, fast, and very effective.

The seminar will be led by a 16 year veteran of the martial arts, Master Robert Reed. Robert is a 6th degree black belt in Shinjumasu, a 5th degree black belt in Kajukenbo, and a 2nd degree black belt in American Kenpo. He has taught dozens of self offense seminars and is a 2009 Universal Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee. Robert continues his studies under Grandmaster Moses Williams at Fire Dragon Martial Arts academy. Fee $15.

For nine days in November, artist studios, art galleries, and various spaces all over east Austin will open up their doors to the public for the 10th East Austin Studio Tour. E.A.S.T. is a celebration of east Austin’s creative community and a chance for the public to get a behind-the-scenes look at working artists’ spaces and processes. Visitors can purchase art, see where artists work, and visit with artists about their art process. Additionally, a number of spaces will be presenting various art and performance events on all ends of the artistic spectrum.

FULL TOUR: 12 – 20 November 2011
ARTISTS & STUDIOS: open the weekends of November 12/13 & 19/20, 11:00am – 6:00pm
EVENTS & EXHIBITS: various hours and dates throughout the nine days of the tour (set by each individual venue; see website or catalog for full listing)

The exhibition spaces include established & pop-up venues which are presenting fine art or performances. Favorites, essentials and must haves. We all have them. They change from time to time, but there are products that we can all attest that are kept in our bathroom cabinets and purses always. The lovely Lauren shows us her latest faves for summertime.
From L-R:

1. Elemental Mineral Mist by The Inventive Line -
Lauren says: This stuff feels so AMAZING on your face. Whether you use as a toner or a simple refresher throughout the day, it's calming and cooling. The cucumber smells and feels so fresh, in addition to calming any redness. It's also very soothing if you have any sun or wind burn. Quick tip: I spray mine on top of my makeup for a youthful dewy glow.

2. Patio Oil by Jao -
This is a brand new addition to the fantastic line of Jao products we already love. It's their version of an insect repellent. It's DEET free, it smells good and it keeps the nasty mosquitos away!

Spring has just sprung and yet it's already starting to feel like summer. As the weather gets warmer, dear readers, we all look for ways to keep cool and feel fresh. Whether that involves finding a nice shady spot to enjoy patio drinks or shopping for some new frocks, the change in weather is welcome after being bundled up for months and blasting the heaters. One way to wake up looking fresh and fabulous is to have your lashes tinted. The process only takes about 15 minutes of your time, uses vegetable dye and is an instant eye opener! Lash tinting is a great alternative for fair haired beauties as well as a great cover up for grays. The best part is that you eliminate the need for mascara, which when summer rolls around is a plus plus for any outdoor activities like swimming or let's just face it...walking in this Central Texas humidity.

Inspiration: Three Twisted Buns

Today we are inspired by this post we saw on one of our favorite blogs, A Cup of Jo.

It is a beautiful, simple and fun way to wear your hair this Spring. What is your go-to fast easy updo?

1. This style is so easy, it's laughable. Day-old hair is best (which is true for most hairstyles, since it's easier to work with hair that has a little dirt in it).

2. Divide your hair into three equal parts and quickly spray each section with a little hairspray to help give it hold. Let the hairspray set for a couple seconds, and then lightly comb it out.

3. Take the section on your right side, and twist your hair all the way down to the end. You want to twist counter-clockwise, toward your face. Wrap the right section in on itself, just like you're making a little bun. Let some of the hair stick out, it's ok (you don't want them to look like Princess Leia buns).

4. Pin the right bun in place. I like to use these mini bobby pins, since they're easier to hide and they're coated in rubber so they hold your hair better.

5. Next, twist the middle section clockwise and pin. Then twist the left section clockwise and pin.

6. Spray the three buns with a little more hairspray, and you're done!

The North American Handmade Bike Show is happening this weekend in Austin and there are fellas on bikes all over town to prove it.
Not only that, there are parties happening as well. Our shop neighbors, Austin Bikes, are prepping for theirs right now! And I hear that other famous cyclist from Austin, Lance, is also having a party at his bike shop, Mellow Johnny's.
It's 67 degrees and sunny. Cute guys are on bicycles...not a bad way to start the weekend! Spring is here Austin!

First of all, we love Lamberts and Perla's, so when we hear that the people behind those two yummy spots are to open a new little cafe in the recently vacated spot where the Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse resided, it made us happy. Good, because Bouldin is growing in its own right and just moved up the street and even better that an established group of local foodies are moving in. The best of both worlds! We look forward to eating a noodle bowl and seeing what else these guys have to offer!

Lauren says....We are lovin this mousse by Kevin Murphy containing tangerine oil and B vitamins. It creates soft, flexible fullness, the perfect product for creating this season's easiest hair trend - the adorable ballerina bun!

1. apply a generous amount from roots to ends when damp
2. rough dry hair until completely dry
3. using a soft bristled brush create a pony tail at the crown of the head
4. twist the pony tail around itself until you form a bun
5. pin in place.
6. remember....messy is good!

Perhaps it's an excuse to brush off all the old and start anew and who doesn't need that every once in a while, right? That said, we are going to start incorporating new elements to our blog, it's a work in progress, so please feel free to let us know what you think, give suggestions...or gold stars...whatever it is we want to hear from you! This week we wanted to start off with a little bit of inspiration for Spring. We have had some unseasonably cold cold weather here in Austin, TX, only to be blessed with some absolutely gorgeous sunny days this past week. This time of year is always so fun around here, more so, because South By Southwest aka SXSW or South By (as we all call it) is less than a month away. It definitely brings in the crazy, but the vibe is infectious and if you want to know the truth, the fest really seems to challenge everyone step up their game when it comes to being stylish ;).

Reading yesterday's post on WhoWhatWear Daily cemented that Spring is almost here.

Which leads to our prediction - lots of flowery beauties rockin their cowboy boots this season.

Hey everyone! We have been busy these last few weeks, dealing with this not so fun weather, as well as having a couple of events at Sabia. First up was the MANuary event that we blogged about here. We had such a great time! It was so nice to add a different element (i.e. males) to our little shop. We had a great turnout, the special cocktails that Dulce Vida Tequila provided were excellent and we were able to help introduce a new menswear brand, Criquet Shirts, which sport a very clean design and look rather dapper!

Contrary to what I previously said, my family all time faves are 'Overboard' and 'Chronicles of Riddick' My faves include the two just mentioned plus, 'Dune', 'Blade Runner' and 'Nights of Cabiria'.'

'Well, I definitely don't love reality shows. I don't like to numb my mind anymore. There was a time for sure, but now I am so happy to be living in Austin that I don't like to waste what precious time I have watching TV. 'I love Marfa so much! My sister, Brooke, just opened this rad vintage store called 'Little Liberty'. We have been discussing doing a pop up spa at her shop and then putting together a dance party afterwards. There is this little spot behind her store that has an amazing teepee and a dance floor that is BEGGING for a sweet party!'

What is your favorite part of your job?
'Everything! But, if I have to narrow it down, I really enjoy sitting down and chatting with my clients, helping them to express themselves in a way that they normally don't. It doesn't have to be super deep or anything, just working together and talking in analogies to help them figure out a look or feel that they want. So fun!'

Any advice for the 'younger generation'?
"It's pretty simple, but, Smoking is very very dumb. Also, think about the environment when choosing your UV protector. There are a lot of unnatural chemicals that can be harmful to our oceans. And, as my mom always says, stand up straight and suck in your tummy!'

Although you are now back in Austin, you still work in New York as well, can you elaborate on that?
'Yes, I travel every other month to New York where I work out of the same salon that Oribe works out of when he is in NYC, so I think that is pretty cool!'

Favorite magazines?

'There is a magazine called "Big" that I love love love! It's released quarterly, its huge and filled with amazing glossy images by artists and designers from all across the globe featuring a particular concept that is 'Big' at the moment. My personal fave was 'BIG Horror', which contained so many different crazy pictures of different artists and what is their idea of 'horror'. Utilizing beautiful models, perfectly styled and accompanied by stories of beautiful tragedies. Really unique and amazing'

Since, 'BIG' is not as readily available, I'll also take French Vogue, V, Scientific American and Nylon. 'Teen Vogue' used to be awesome, but something happened a few months ago and it's like an over 35ers mag now, and I'm not talking cool over 35ers, I'm talking mom jeans.

Favorite shops in Austin?

'Creatures will always be my fave for more than nostalgia's sake before I moved. But, New York changed me in a fancy brand kind of way so, I'd have to say that I love Spring Frost! I also just discovered that the outlet mall in San Marcos has a Pendleton store and the Last Call by Neiman Marcus is so much better than the one that's here in town.

'Thick bracelets / cuffs to put my hair clips on, hair ribbons and shooooooooooes'

Can you tell us about any fun hair trends that you are excited about trying out on yourself or suggesting to your clients?
'YES! The Platinum Seamless extensions are the absolute coolest extensions that I have ever seen. I say this with total honesty, as I have never really loved extensions because they are not as fun to style or cut as natural hair, but the Platinum are gorgeous and move just like natural hair.'

Before bed beauty ritual?
'One cup of hot tea and I ALWAYS sleep on a silk pillowcase'

Do you have a favorite hair tool?
'Definitely the Y.S. Park Round Brush. It is hollowed out with Japanese perfection to make the brush perfectly balanced and the bristles are a mixture of boar and nylon, set in at different lengths to put a perfect tension on the hair. I would also like to add that I am in LOVE with my new Y.S. Park combs, we don't carry them at Sabia, but they are pretty amazing to cut with!'

Can you recommend any supplements that you are using in your regimen?
'Vitamin E is doing amazing things to my skin lately'

What is the one staple that is always in your purse?
'Lipstick'

Did you ever have a hair disaster when you were growing up?
'Yes! My mom might kill me for saying this, because, she too is a 'Hair Stylist Extraordinaire', but she was practicing a technique 'cutting with the curl' and I was selected as the model for a trial run. Let's just say, it wasn't a 'look for me'. The layers were a bit too short and I ended up wearing my hair in clips for most of my 6th grade year. Ironically, that is precisely the way that I cut hair now, which has evolved to cut with the natural bend of the hair. Perhaps my past experience helped me to perfect this technique into a way that works for me and my clients.'

What is your favorite holiday ritual?
'Thanksgiving for sure. My mom takes this holiday very serious, spending days cooking the sauce for her amazing lasagna. I just love any family get together, because we are always cracking jokes and laughing. But, Thanksgiving is extra special, because, everyone makes their one dish and we can spend the rest of the time enjoying each others company.'

‘I love UCHI and UCHIKO, I could eat at either, everyday. The crispy oysters at Jeffrey’s are amazing and when I am feeling like Mexican, El Meson has the most delicious guacamole, that, accompanied with the Horseshoe Margarita...heaven!’

What is your favorite holiday ritual?

‘My family always celebrates Thanksgiving and Christmas the weekend before the actual holiday. Both of my kids are married and have children. The holidays can be a bit stressful when you have to visit the parents, in-laws, extended family, etc..as well as trying to have your own traditions. By celebrating the weekend before, it helps us to take the stress off, relax and enjoy our time together’

Favorite Austin landmark?

‘Town Lake, right before the sun comes up. The lake is so beautiful and you can literally see the city waking up.’

Luckily Austinites aren’t subjected to harsh winters, but the weather does change, the heaters kick on and our skin is subjected to this. What are your tips for adapting to these changes?

‘Stay hydrated. This is a great time to do a series of peels to help repair the damage from the summer. Another option is microdermabrasion, which typically uses mineral crystals to help remove wrinkles. However, at Sabia, we use the NewApeel DiamondTome System, which does not use crystals, therefore resulting in little or no irritation.’

Tell us about some of the lash services that you offer

‘I love doing lash extensions! I have been doing them for about four (4) years now, they are so much FUN and make getting ready in the morning so much easier. A synthetic lash is individually applied to one of your natural lashes using surgical glue. I can create a natural look or we can make them look very dramatic, and who doesn’t want longer more lush looking lashes without the use of mascara?’

What is your before bed beauty ritual?

‘I have to say, I agree with Elizabeth and Emily, the Clarisonic is the best at washing away the day. Many of us don’t realize that it's important to spend a full minute washing our faces. The Clarisonic has a timer, so when it beeps, you are done!

I use the LHA Cleanser with my Clarisonic brush, I then follow with the LHA Solution to remove dead skin and residual makeup and sunscreen and LHA Serum to loosen the bonds that hold dead skin together and finish up with A.G.E. Interrupter as moisturizer and A.G.E. eye complex, all by SkinCeuticals, Revitalash for my lashes and Jao lip balm. While this may sound like quite a few steps, the key to aging gracefully is preventative skincare’

Did you ever have a hair disaster when you were growing up?

‘I have had many a hair disaster and that is a strength in my career. I know how it feels to have too much cut off, to not be listened to, and to grow out terrible layers for 2 years. I remain conscious of this when considering how to cut or color my clients hair.’

What's the best brush in your opinion?

‘Mason Pearson mixed brush is great to have for detangling, smoothing, and conditioning the hair and scalp. An investment that will last many years.’

What's makes your job great?

‘I am able to constantly strive to improve because if I do not, someone else will do it better than me, in addition to that, I get to combine my creative skills with socializing!!’

Favorite magazines?

'Oh wow, Well, I have what someone whom I live with might call a magazine addiction. But, if I have to list them, I like the usual fashion mags like Elle and Marie Claire, I get inspiration from catalogues like J. Crew and Martha Stewart Living (seriously good recipes in that one) and I LOVE the French couture mags that you can find for like $20 bucks at Book People. Amazing visual stimulation!!!!’

‘I love to see people getting dressed up and looking fancy for parties and pictures. We are so casual in Austin, it is nice to have an excuse look hot.’

‘My friend Anne made me a dance-y mix and it is all kinds of good stuff. Au Revoire Simon is what comes to mind.’

What is BALAYAGE?

In a previous post, Lauren discussed the BALAYAGE technique. We wanted to know more and share with you, dear readers..

BALAYAGE literally means ‘to sweep’ in French. This technique was developed by celebrity stylist, Jacques Dessange, over 20 years ago in Paris, and also where Lauren studied the procedure.

This two-tone hairstyle is also lately known as ‘dip dye’, a moniker borrowed from the fashion term for a graduated color from dark to light. This hairstyle embraces the visible root, but by ‘sweeping’ on the color it results in a more natural, sun bleached look. The highlights are painted on the hair by hand and in a sweeping motion from the base to the top of the hair. The color is applied heavier at the tip to produce a hairstyle that looks like you’ve spent a decadent summer on the French Riviera...and who doesn’t want that?

Are there any fun hair trends that you are excited about trying out on yourself or suggesting to clients?

'I love that strawberry blondes and redheads are so in right now. Most people can look amazing with a warmer shade, it just needs to be the right one to flatter their skin tone and perk up their eye color. I notice many more models and celebs going red and I love love love it. Fair skin with light eyes looks great with soft golden copper shades, similar to Isla Fisher's.

Medium skin tones with light or dark eyes look great in deeper copper auburn shades, like Kate Walsh.

Dark skin tone and dark eyes are most flattered with cool reds, like a dark cherry or mahogany.'

Do you recommend sticking to just one shampoo/conditioner combo? Or do you have several in your shower?

‘If you color your hair, I recommend using the Phytocitrus shampoo and mask right after color and then weekly to maintain vibrancy. It keeps the cuticle closed so your color won't fade nearly as fast and you will have SHINE!!
The most important thing is to use what is made for your hair and scalp type. Most hairstylists know the ingredients of their line of choice very well which can be extremely helpful in getting the perfect cocktail of products. Don't use anything full of plastics and sulfates, they are not good for anything.’

Before bed beauty ritual?

‘Satin pillowcases are really good for your hair and skin!! Sleep in deep conditioner if your hair is very dry or porous and shampoo it out in the morning, it will look and feel amazing. (I like Born Again Mask by Kevin Murphy)’

You recently spent some time in Paris learning a new technique, could you tell us about that?

Do you have any recommendations as we move into the drier winter months?

‘Add Inventive Organic Jojoba Oil to your moisturizer to give it a boost, this way you can finish your product and buy a stronger one when your done, plus it eliminates waste!’

Tips on skincare?

‘You should pay attention to your skin. My skin fluctuates daily on how much moisturizer I need, or if any at all, especially in the Texas heat . In cases like these, I use the Hydrobalance Tonic from the Inventive Line to thin out my moisturizer or just the tonic by itself if I'm feeling too oily.'

What is your before bed ritual?

‘My ritual is consistently going thru my routine every night! When you change your routine drastically, your skin can look dull or break out.

Our skin loves consistency. However, if you do change give a product at least 2 weeks to work it's magic and then decide if its right for you.’

Now that we are moving into colder weather, do you have any suggestions for adapting our skin to the climate?

'You will need a heavier moisturizer! Our skin has different needs as the weather changes. You might also want to change up your cleanser from FOAMING to something CREAMIER and less drying. Its also ok for all you RETINA gals to get back on the junk now that our skin isnt working so hard to protect us from the harsh summer sun, but SUNSCREEN is especially important for you!'

Do you recommend any supplements for skincare?

'Yes, MSM, which stands for METHYLSULFONOMETHANE and it is an incredible ANTI-INFLAMMATORY for all connective tissue. This means, it is a great help for those who suffer from arthritis, but it is also a huge support for hair, skin and nails.
